China Calls on U.S. to Halt Political Interference in COVID-19 Origins Probe

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, a representative from China’s Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva called on the United States to stop politicizing efforts to trace the origins of COVID-19 and to refrain from pressuring international bodies.

In response to criticism from the U.S. delegation at the ongoing 78th World Health Assembly (WHA), the spokesperson expressed astonishment at what they called baseless allegations. They pointed out the irony of the U.S. targeting countries that remain committed to supporting the World Health Organization (WHO), despite its earlier withdrawal from the organization. The United States has clearly lost its sense of right and wrong, the spokesperson remarked, emphasizing that China’s support for the WHO has always been sincere and not intended to exert influence.

The spokesperson emphasized that China quickly provided the global community with information and the virus’s genetic sequence after the outbreak began. China also contributed medical aid and funding to the WHO and 153 nations, including the U.S., as part of its commitment to global public health.

China continues to back a science-based investigation into the virus’s origins, led by the WHO. The country has welcomed expert teams from the organization on several occasions to conduct joint research. These efforts concluded that a lab-origin theory was extremely improbable, a finding that the spokesperson said showcases China’s openness and cooperation.

The spokesperson also criticized certain countries for trying to shift blame for their own mishandling of the pandemic onto others. They called such political manipulation of the crisis disgraceful and destined to fail, adding that the U.S. still owes the international community answers regarding the origins of the pandemic and its management within the country.

Finally, the spokesperson called on the U.S. to provide the WHO with early case data and offer transparency concerning Fort Detrick and its overseas network of biological laboratories. The U.S. should, they concluded, stop turning COVID-19 origins tracing into a political tool and refrain from influencing international institutions.
