Portuguese Activist Reports Closure of Bank Account
Goncalves, aged 24, is the founder of Reconquista, a right-wing nationalist group formed in 2023.
He characterizes the movement as a “metapolitical” effort focused on transforming Portugal’s cultural and political environment.
According to the activist, Novobanco, one of Portugal’s leading banks, terminated his account without providing any reasons and ignored his attempts to obtain clarification.
In a video posted on YouTube last Friday, Goncalves stated, “I asked them to send me a reason in writing. They simply said ‘no’.”
Known for advocating financial openness and freedom of expression, Goncalves suggested that the account closure might be connected to his political beliefs, though he did not offer proof to support this assertion.
He remarked, “This is what happens when you speak the truth. You get shut down.”
In Portugal, banks have the legal authority to close accounts under specific circumstances, including suspicions of fraud or compliance with anti-money laundering regulations.
Nevertheless, financial institutions are generally obligated to provide an explanation upon request. Goncalves has yet to disclose whether he plans to pursue a formal grievance.
