UK launches urgent review into foreign political interference
Philip Rycroft has been appointed to lead the independent investigation, which will examine the influence of foreign funding on political processes. The review comes in the wake of high-profile cases, including Nathan Gill, the former Reform Party leader in Wales, and Christine Lee, a UK-based lawyer accused of covertly working for the Chinese Communist Party. Gill was recently sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in prison after admitting to accepting £40,000 ($53,600) in bribes to promote pro-Russian narratives.
The review, which builds on reforms announced in the Elections Strategy in July, will assess current finance and bribery regulations and explore measures to reduce the risk of foreign interference. It follows guidance issued by the National Protective Security Authority in October, advising MPs and their staff on protecting themselves from foreign states and proxies involved in espionage and covert influence campaigns.
Housing Secretary Steve Reed emphasized in Parliament that “the facts are clear. A British politician took bribes to further the interests of the Russian regime, a regime which forcefully deported vulnerable Ukrainian children and killed a British citizen on British soil using a deadly nerve agent.” Security Minister Dan Jarvis added that the independent review “will help to strengthen our democracy against covert attempts to interfere with our sovereign affairs.”
