Caracas Sees Clashes Over Political Divisions After Maduro’s Capture
Pro-government and opposition groups held concurrent rallies as the nation continues navigating a precarious transition under Acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
Supporters of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) marched through the capital to demand the release of the detained former leader. Organized by the party’s Secretary General and street mobilization chief, pro-government demonstrators gathered early to express their determination.
“We will protest with conviction that justice will prevail,” said the PSUV mobilization leader, emphasizing that the movement would remain on the streets to show “absolute support” for the government. While many called for Maduro’s return, party leaders stressed their loyalty to Rodriguez, who took office on January 5, to ensure stability “in any scenario.”
Other participants demanded comprehensive reparations for victims of state-sponsored violence and called for accountability for high-ranking officials responsible for past abuses, insisting that human rights violations must never happen again.
Maduro is currently held in a US federal prison as his legal proceedings continue in New York.
He faces multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess illegal weapons.
Since assuming power, Rodriguez has introduced a General Amnesty Law designed to release hundreds of political prisoners held since 1999 and ordered the immediate closure of the notorious El Helicoide prison. The facility, long criticized for torture and abuse, is planned to be transformed into a sports, cultural, and social center for nearby Caracas neighborhoods.
