Trump Warns Republican Lawmakers of Political Repercussions
In posts published Wednesday on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Canada of exploiting the United States and reiterated that tariffs are central to his economic and national security agenda. He warned that any Republican in the House or Senate who votes against tariffs would face serious consequences during upcoming elections, including primary contests.
The House of Representatives voted 219–211 in favor of a resolution seeking to rescind broad tariffs imposed on Canadian goods under a national emergency declaration tied to fentanyl trafficking. Six Republican lawmakers joined Democrats in supporting the measure. The resolution challenges Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify the tariffs.
If the resolution passes the Senate, Trump is expected to veto it. Supporters of the measure currently lack the two-thirds majority required in both chambers of Congress to override a presidential veto.
Trump invoked the fentanyl-related emergency last year to impose 35% tariffs on Canadian imports under IEEPA authority. In addition, Canada faces separate tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber implemented through other executive powers.
The House vote came after procedural changes compelled lawmakers to address the issue directly, following months of avoiding formal votes on the administration’s tariff policies. The matter also coincides with ongoing consideration by the US Supreme Court regarding the legality of the president’s reliance on IEEPA, after several justices expressed doubts during hearings last November.
