Argentina, Chile Forge Closer Ties Amid South American Political Shift
As stated by reports, Kast’s visit marked his first official international trip since taking office on March 11, cementing an ideological partnership between the two neighboring leaders. The agenda included discussions on strategic cooperation in mining, energy, and bilateral trade, which reached nearly $8 billion in 2025, but both leaders focused heavily on the extradition of Galvarino Apablaza. Apablaza, a former Chilean guerrilla, is accused of orchestrating the 1991 assassination of Senator Jaime Guzman, a key figure in Chile’s right-wing history.
Apablaza, who had lived in Argentina as a political refugee for decades, had his asylum revoked in 2017. Tensions escalated last week when Argentine police attempted to arrest him, only to discover he had fled.
“I am certain that sooner or later, the fugitive Apablaza will have to answer to the courts,” President Kast said during a press briefing in Buenos Aires. “All these legal actions and appeals he is filing only confirm that he is someone seeking to evade justice.” He added, “We will continue all diplomatic and judicial efforts to ensure he faces trial.”
Reports indicate that Apablaza’s defense team has appealed to the United Nations and other international bodies, claiming that any arrest would be unlawful and that the extradition is politically motivated.
