Bangladesh Lawmakers Vote to Outlaw Hasina's Awami League Party

(MENAFN) Bangladeshi lawmakers voted unanimously on Wednesday to formally codify a ban on the political party of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, transforming an executive ordinance into binding national law and delivering a sweeping blow to the country's once-dominant political force.

The parliamentary vote converted the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance into permanent legislation, establishing a legal framework under which political parties can face criminal prosecution for offences or terrorist-related activities — a measure wielded directly against Hasina's embattled movement.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, who presented the bill to the chamber, confirmed that it passed without a single amendment or dissenting vote. The enacted law formally suspends the Awami League's registration with the Election Commission and imposes a sweeping prohibition on all forms of political activity by the party — encompassing social media activity, online publications, printed press statements, and public gatherings.

The legislative action builds on steps taken by the interim government in May of last year, when it issued an ordinance suspending the Awami League's political operations and those of its leadership, pending the conclusion of their trials before the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

The crackdown traces its origins to the dramatic collapse of Hasina's government. She was forced from power following a mass student-led uprising and fled to India on August 5, 2024 — a seismic political rupture that, according to the UN, claimed the lives of at least 1,400 people and left more than 20,000 others injured before the unrest subsided.
