German Left Party Politician Accuses Interior Minister of Antisemitism
The complaint concerns an exchange during Thursday’s edition of the popular television program Maybrit Illner, where Dobrindt and Heidi Reichinnek, head of the Left Party’s parliamentary group in the Bundestag, engaged in a heated discussion.
During the program, host Maybrit Illner mistakenly said: “Elif Eralp says she is an anti-Semite … She is not an anti-Semite.” Dobrindt then responded, “Well, she is.”
Eralp’s lawyer, Jasper Prigge, said the minister’s response effectively endorsed Illner’s initial verbal mistake.
In the written complaint, Prigge argued that Dobrindt’s statement amounted to “defamation” under Germany’s Criminal Code. He further maintained that the minister had made an incorrect factual claim that could constitute “insult” under the same legislation.
Prigge also argued that describing someone as an anti-Semite can cause “significantly damaging” harm to that person’s reputation.
